In a world where up to 70 million people globally experience persistent sleep difficulties (1), there has been an increase in demand for solutions to aid a good night’s sleep.

Prosomnial™ is rigorously tested and analysed guaranteeing the presence, and quality, of natural melatonin and the absence of synthetic compounds, contaminants and toxins.
Prosomnial ™ is a versatile natural melatonin to assist with sleep and is available in Gummy, ODT and tablet formats.
Importance of sleep
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware that sleep is vital for many bodily processes and that it is required in order to maintain healthy physical and mental functioning. Around 30 - 50% of the global population experiences insomnia or other forms of sleep disruption at some point in their lives (2).
A lack of sleep may have profound effects and is linked to an increased risk of physical and mental health issues and lowered quality of life (3-11).
Physical health | Mental health |

Global sleep supplement market
The current global sleep supplement market reflects consumer needs, and desires, for solutions to sleep issues and is valued at US$ 7.6 billion and is set to expand to reach a value of US$ 12.9 billion by 2034 (12).
The melatonin market is seeing a large rise in demand and is also forecast to grow rapidly (13).
Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone produced primarily at the onset of darkness by the pineal gland. Secondary production of melatonin can be through other sites such as the gastrointestinal tract, particularly after eating. Melatonin is an essential component of circadian balance and the sleep-wake cycle.
Disruption to melatonin production can occur due to altered exposure to light, age, shift work, jet lag, work-life imbalances (14), and reduced enzymatic actions (15).
Melatonin has been shown to improve the onset of sleep and sleep quality as well as prevent and ease jet lag (16-18). Melatonin has also shown to play a role in other aspects of health and brings benefits including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and immune enhancing properties alongside supporting cardiometabolic health and healthy ageing, as well as offering neuroprotection (19).
Natural vs synthetic melatonin
Consumers express a desire to step away from pharmaceutical sleep products due to issues including side effects, such as the so-called “next-day hangover” effect, and potential for addiction.
Synthetic chemically produced melatonin has many negatives, including increased sedation-like effects the next day (20), a higher risk of containing toxic by-products (21, 22), and an increased environmental impact due to processing and chemicals used. In the past, ‘natural’ melatonin has been derived from animal sources, raising concerns about biological contamination, more recently, the focus on plant-sourced melatonin has reduced this concern.
A variety of plants naturally contain melatonin, although the quantity can vary depending upon variety of the plant, the environment in which the plants are cultivated – including geographical location, temperature and exposure to sunlight, as well as harvesting time, ripening processes and techniques used (23, 24). Research has quantified melatonin found in plants and analysis has verified that melatonin is present in commonly cited sources, such as tart cherries and tomatoes, but only at very low nanogram levels (19).
Higher levels of melatonin are seen in mushrooms, and pistachios are reported as being the richest plant source for melatonin, containing on average over 226,000 ng/g DW (25), almost 200% more than tomatoes and tart cherries (26). As research indicates, some plants have low levels of natural melatonin, there are several products on the market claiming melatonin present comes from these sources.
This leads to the question of how can using these melatonin sources in products be economically viable due to the vast quantity of the source required to meet melatonin levels stated? It also brings questions surrounding authenticity of some products and also the actual therapeutic value of the melatonin levels.
Prosomnial™
Prosomnial™ stands out amongst the crowds of natural melatonin products and is a unique, patent-pending, genuine natural pistachio-sourced melatonin with over 7 years of research and development behind it. Prosomnial™ is standardised to contain 1% melatonin, ensuring consistency in effect.
Melatonin exerts an effect through binding to several specific cellular receptors, Prosomnial™ has been shown in independent research to have a high binding affinity for two types of melatonin receptors important for modulating sleep, MT1 and MT2,as well as several other receptors important for health.
The research investigating 25 different ingredients also confirmed that Prosomnial™ contained biologically active melatonin and was as effective as synthetic melatonin (dose for dose) in the receptor pathways used in the research. One key finding from the study was that the researchers discovered that Prosomnial™ was shown to have an additional active principle that either has a direct activating effect, or the ability to potentiate the effect of natural melatonin present (22). This discovery is a step towards understanding the unique benefits that Prosomnial™ brings for sleep promotion.
Ongoing research is being conducted to categorise other components within Prosomnial™ to gain better understanding of how the whole extract has a synergistic effect on sleep, and enhancement of Prosomnial™ melatonin. The synergistic effect may explain why Prosomnial™ may have a better effect compared to other forms of melatonin.
Guaranteed quality
Prosomnial™ undergoes several quality control steps starting with independent authentication, analysis of baseline melatonin in selected pistachio cultivars, and analysis of melatonin in the final extract using HPLC-PDA-ESI-MS, as well as rigorous testing for heavy metals, microbes, pesticide and solvent residues, mycotoxins, and more.
Prosomnial™ also undergoes radiocarbon testing which confirms the presence of only natural melatonin and the absence of any synthetic compounds.
Prosomnial™ versatility
Prosomnial™ has excellent palatability and is easily incorporated into a variety of formats, including gummies, ODT and tablets – ensuring ease of use for consumers, compliance and satisfaction. Prosomnial™ is cost effective due to the use of specific pistachio cultivars with the highest content of melatonin.
How to guarantee melatonin content and product quality
Communication – if the product, source of melatonin or melatonin concentration is in question, get in touch to ask for further details. A lack of open communication may infer data is not available on the ingredients or product, leading to further questions.
Transparency – genuine products and quality melatonin should undergo regular testing – there should be some transparency on evidence of quality control procedures and certificates or documents available. Ensure you can be provided with evidence that the melatonin is derived from the stated source, or present in the claimed quantity.
Independent testing – should evidence not be provided, or be in question, undertake testing independently. Obtain a sample and conduct Carbone14 testing.
Look at the evidence – consider how much detail has been provided, any results of independent testing, how open communication has been, whether pricing reflects the concentration of melatonin within the stated source.
Trust your gut instinct – if there isn’t enough evidence to ensure complete satisfaction in quality – look elsewhere where evidence can be provided. Prosomnial™ is backed by much evidence on quality, melatonin content and mode of action.
