Discover how the LUPASOL® range of branched polyethylenimines boosts both adhesion and cohesion strength in water-based adhesives
LUPASOL®, a range of polyethylenimines (PEI) from BASF Industrial Formulators, is a series of branched spherical polymeric amines. These products support formulators of water-based adhesives, providing strong adhesion, high cohesive strength, and improved wet-bond performance. While these products are primarily used in waterborne systems, they also perfectly dissolve in low molecular alcohols, such as, methanol, ethanol, and propanol and can also be used in solvent-free or 100% systems.
Key benefits of the LUPASOL® range
- Adhesion promoters that support both adhesion and cohesion strength in formulations
- Can act as cross linkers when used in reactive chemistry with chemicals such as epoxy or polyurethane
- High nitrogen-to-carbon ratio (about 1:2), giving very high cationic charge density that adheres onto negatively charged surfaces
- Water-soluble and easy to dilute
- Acts as metal complexation agent & supports pigment dispersion
- Binds and immobilises proteins and other inorganic materials
Key products in the LUPASOL® range
Discover in the table below featuring three products within the LUPASOL® range that have varying molecular weights:
| Product | Product type/form | Key properties | Technical features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lupasol G20 | Waterborne PEI, or Water-free PEI | Low molecular weight; 1,300 molar mass |
Increases the cohesive strength in recommended concentrations from 0.1–1.0% in formulations
Often used in coatings as well at 0.1% concentrations to increase the wet tack/wet adhesion of coatings |
| Lupasol WF | Water-free PEI | Medium molecular weight; 25,000 molar mass |
Designed for adhesion on laminated films at recommended concentrations of 0.5–1.0%
Ideal for moisture-sensitive formulations Commonly used in printing inks applications as an adhesion promoter |
| Lupasol P | Waterborne PEI | High molecular weight; 750,000 molar mass |
Primarily used to increase adhesive strength at concentrations of 0.1–5.0% as an adhesion promoter
Acts as a primer |
